The challenge in this project was to upgrade an existing single storey nursing home and double its size. The key decisions in the design involved the creation of 2 No secure landscaped courtyards to unite the existing building with a 2-storey major extension and to expand free-form dayspaces on to these courtyards. This allowed the creation of relaxing external and internal spaces while light is brought down through the first floor to light ground floor areas thus avoiding darkness and 'institutionalism'. The frontage was also upgraded and increased in scale so as to improve the proportions of the main facade.
